COVID-19

There are numerous risks inherent in travel during a pandemic; students interested in this program should carefully review the COVID-19 information provided by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (including the CDC's domestic travel guidance) to better understand the nature of those risks.

All participants should be aware of the following:

  • ASU regularly updates its COVID-19 safety policies here.
  • Arizona/Maricopa County/Tempe, public and private transportation providers used, and the specific destinations visited on this program may have requirements regarding showing proof of vaccination or a recent negative COVID-19 test or taking additional precautions (such as wearing masks).
  • It is the responsibility of the student to satisfy any such requirements.
  • Unvaccinated individuals may not be able to participate in certain program activities; if those activities require proof of vaccination.
  • Vaccination, testing, and quarantine requirements change regularly; the CDC's travel planner may provide more specific information.

ASU is committed to taking all reasonable precautions to minimize our students' exposure to risks related to COVID-19 during their Critical languages Institute program*. Such precautions include:

  • Evaluating all program activities to ensure, to the maximum extent possible, compliance with ASU and local protocols for maintaining physical distance and face covering during all program activities**;
  • Establishing response procedures to support students who receive a positive COVID-19 test during the program, who develop symptoms of COVID-19, or who have been directly exposed to an individual who has tested positive for COVID-19.

These precautions may change, or additional precautions may be adopted, based on the state of the pandemic at the time of the program and/or the particular circumstances of the program location(s).

*Students should understand that it is possible to contract COVID-19 even if they follow all of the safety precautions and guidelines required by ASU and recommended by the CDC and other federal, state and local government health authorities.

**The Critical Languages Institute (CLI) will enforce ASU's on-campus protocols to the maximum extent possible on this program, but students should understand that all physical distancing requirements may not be enforceable in all program activities or on all modes of program transportation.

All participants in this program will be required to review and sign a COVID-19 Disclosure and a COVID-19 Behavioral Commitment (located in the CLI application). You can find additional information and resources on the COVID-19 FAQs, and CLI will communicate any updated or program-specific guidelines to you prior to travel.

Anchored on one end by gleaming office towers and on the other by the university, with a mix of eccentric and upscale establishments, Mill Avenue caters to both international students and international businesses.

Housing & Meals

HOUSING
CLI offers language-oriented on-campus housing at one of the ASU dormitories (TBD).

ASU typically offers double-occupancy rooms for $35/day, with bathrooms shared between two double-occupancy rooms.

At this point, ASU has a very limited supply of single-occupancy rooms. We may not be able to offer this option for Summer 2022.

Participants who wish to live in an ASU dormitory and require rooms with ADA accommodations should email cli@asu.edu as soon as possible. ASU has a limited supply of such rooms, but CLI will work with Housing to try fulfill any such requests.

Bed linens rentals are available for an additional one-time $45 charge.

Typical amenities include: laundry facilities, kitchen facilities, vending machines, air conditioning, and basic cable.

Kitchens are usually shared among residents of the hall and the CLI language clubs, so access may be limited at times. CLI does not provide supplies for kitchen areas.

MEALS
CLI participants may eat on campus or may make their own meal arrangements. ASU offers a food court in the student union. (See Memorial Union Businesses for details on food-court options.)

CLI does not offer a meal plan for any of its on campus programs.

OFF-CAMPUS OPTIONS
CLI students are not required to live in the ASU dorm or to eat on campus. Private summer sublets are available near campus. Price and quality vary. CLI does not assist with off campus housing arrangements.

All prices and descriptions on this page are based on 2019 pricing and are subject to change. Once ASU provides us with 2022 pricing, we will update this page accordingly. Participants are responsible for checking current prices and details before signing billing, housing, or meal contracts.

Indonesian - 4-week optional extension in Bali

Overview

First-Year Indonesian study abroad in Bali, Indonesia

CLI's summer program in Bali helps students extend and solidify the communicative and cultural skills they develop during intensive classes on the ASU campus.

The program provides 3 hours a day of classroom instruction, during which students review the material covered in Arizona, with an emphasis on listening and speaking skills. COVID-19

There are numerous risks inherent in travel during a pandemic; students interested in this program should carefully review the COVID-19 information provided by the U.S. State Department (including the State Department's country-specific information) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (including the CDC's country-specific information) to better understand the nature of those risks.

All participants should be aware of the following:

  • ASU's service provider, Ngurah Rai University, requires participants in this program to be fully vaccinated.
  • Other requirements such as showing proof of vaccination or a recent negative COVID-19 test may be imposed by the country the program is visiting, the airline or other transportation providers used, or the specific destinations visited.
  • Vaccination, testing, and quarantine requirements change regularly; the State Department's country-specific information may provide more country-specific information

ASU is committed to taking all reasonable precautions to minimize our students' exposure to risks related to COVID-19 during their Critical Languages Institute program*. Such precautions include:

  • Carefully monitoring COVID-19 travel restrictions to ensure, as much as possible, that students will be able to enter the program country;
  • Evaluating all program activities to ensure, to the maximum extent possible, compliance with ASU and local protocols for maintaining physical distance and face covering during all program activities**;
  • Providing an international insurance policy, including coverage for housing and meal expenses in case of mandatory quarantine/self-isolation due to direct exposure;

We cannot emphasize enough how important it is to book tickets that allow for flexibility. Most airlines are offering this themselves, but be sure to read all fine print not only for ticket conditions, but also for any possible flight insurance you might purchase.

*Students should understand that it is possible to contract COVID-19 even if they follow all of the safety precautions and guidelines required by ASU and recommended by the CDC and other federal, state and local government health authorities.

COACHES AND GUIDES
The Bali program makes heavy use of language coaches and activity guides. Coaches and guides work with students in small groups outside of class time to practice conversational skills, to explore the city, and to complete classroom-related extramural assignments.

CULTURAL PROGRAMS
In addition to 3 hours of day of language class, students and their Indonesian activity partners participate in at least 3 hours a week of extracurricular activities, including but not limited to: "survival skills" exercises (buying food, negotiating cab rides, asking for directions, etc.), visits to historic sites, and hands-on activities, including Indonesian martial arts, southeast Asian culinary classes, batik painting lessons, etc.

Students enjoy one free weekend; and one major out-of-town excursion, in Indonesia, with their activity partners.

LOCATION

Denpasar is the capital of Bali. With a population of 500,000, Denpasar is a modern city with a distinctly Balinese vibe. The city is known for Pasar Badung, its largest traditional market; for its Art Center, the site of the annual Bali Art Festival; and for its Performing Arts School. Denpasar is a city of monuments and statues, the best known of which is Bajra Sandhi, the monument of peace. Denpasar provides easy access to points of interest in Bali, and it is only 30 minutes from Ngurah Rai International Asirport.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
The CLI Indonesian in Bali program is provided in cooperation with the Ngurah Rai University. Courses are held on the university's fully-appointed classrooms in eastern Denpasar.

Housing & Meals

HOUSING
For summer 2022, CLI will not place students with host families. Instead, students will be placed in alternative housing options such as dorms, apartments, or hotels. We are currently working with our providers on this and will update accepted students on the housing and meal options available for their programs.
