Academic Year Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship

The All Year Foreign Language & Area Studies Fellowship (FLAS) provides eligible undergraduate students with a $5,000 stipend and up to $10,000 in tuition and a $20,000 living stipend and up to $18,000 in tuition for graduate students who demonstrate intermediate and/or intensive study of Albanian, Armenian, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian (BCS), Kazakh, Macedonian, Persian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Tatar, Turkish, Ukrainian, or Uzbek.

Application Requirements

  1. Applicants must be a U.S. Citizen, National, or Permanent Resident.
  2. Applicants must be a degree-seeking student in good standing at Arizona State University (ASU) or have been accepted as a degree-seeking student at ASU.
  3. Applicant must be eligible to receive an Arizona State University tuition scholarship.
  4. Applicants must be prepared to enroll in at least one Russian, Eurasian, or East European area studies course for the fall and spring semester. Any Independent studies or Reading and Conference classes will need Department of Education Approval.
  5. Applicants must be prepared to enroll in the one of the following languages for the fall and spring semester: Albanian, Armenian, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian (BCS), Kazakh, Macedonian, Persian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Tatar, Turkish, Ukrainian, or Uzbek. Any Independent studies or Reading and Conference classes will need Department of Education Approval.
  6. Applicants must have a 3.0 minimum GPA and a demonstrated interest in Central and/or Eastern Europe.
  7. Any student wishing to be considered under the primary preference category of financial need established by the US Department of Education must submit a FAFSA.  All eligible students will be considered, however, regardless of demonstrated need.  We prioritize those with need and do not exclude those without.
  8. Applicants with less than a 3.0 GPA are encouraged to apply and address their GPA in the Statement of Purpose.
  9. Applicants from underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply. Applicants from all majors are encouraged to apply
