STARTALK 2016 Russian is a non-residential immersion program is designed for middle-school and high-school-age learners with no previous knowledge of Russian. In a technology-rich environment with an emphasis on interculturality and community, learners ground their interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational language learning through virtual activity guides, classroom immersion, and in-house cultural activities. Throughout the summer, students connect, compare, and communicate their experiences through a variety of technologies to a community of learning partners from ASU’s Russian language training center in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, as well as with Arizona students with intermediate Russian proficiency studying in the Bishkek center. By the end of the program, learners acquire greater knowledge of the cultures coexisting under the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union, have greater sensitivity to Russophone Central Asian culture, and to a unique physical environment, and language, as shaped by individuals, communities, and cultures . Students achieve a heightened interest in Russian language and culture, have first-hand experience with more advanced local learners, and explore ways in which they can use the language both in and out of the school environment.
