Peter Schmelz, ASU School of Music
Dr. Peter J. Schmelz received his Ph.D. in History and Literature of Music from the University of California, Berkeley. He serves as an Associate Professor of Musicology in the ASU School of Music in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts. He comes to ASU from Washington University in St. Louis, where he served as Chair of the Department of Music. Schmelz’s primary area of expertise is twentieth-century music with a focus on the music produced in Russia, Ukraine, and the Soviet Union, including that by Shostakovich, Schnittke, and Silvestrov. His book, Such Freedom, If Only Musical: Unofficial Soviet Music and Society during the Thaw (Oxford, 2009), received a Deems Taylor award from ASCAP. In addition, he serves as the editor of the Journal of Musicology.
