LOCATION
Arizona State University is a large, metropolitan university. The main campus, housing 64,000 students, is located in Tempe, 15 minutes by light rail from Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. Emblematic of the lively, eclectic atmosphere of Tempe is the city's main street, Mill Avenue. Anchored on one end by gleaming office towers and on the other by the university, with a mix of eccentric and upscale establishments, Mill Avenue caters to both international students and international businesses. 

HOUSING
CLI offers language-segregated on-campus housing in the at one of the ASU dormitories (TBD).

ASU typically offers double-occupancy rooms for $17.50/day, with bathrooms shared between two double-occupancy rooms.

ASU also typically offers single-occupancy rooms for $31/day. Singles are identical to doubles, but with only one occupant. They share a pass-through bathroom and have two sets of furniture.

Bed linens are available for an additional one-time $20 charge.

Typical amenities include: laundry facilities, kitchen facilities, vending machines, air conditioning and basic cable.

Kitchens are usually shared among residents of the hall and the CLI language clubs, so access may be limited at times.

DINING
CLI participants may eat on campus or may make their own meal arrangements. ASU offers a food court in the student union. (See Memorial Union Businesses Map for details on food-court options.)

OFF-CAMPUS OPTIONS
CLI students are not required to live in the ASU dorm or to eat on campus. Private summer sublets are available near campus. Price and quality vary. CLI does not assist with off campus housing arrangements.

Department of State SealTITLE VIII FUNDING FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS

The Department of State's Title VIII program funds graduate students with U.S. citizenship to study less commonly taught languages.

Title VIII provides fellowships of up to $5,000 for the study of 1st-year Ukrainian in CLI-Arizona.

Supported by the Melikian Center's endowment and by private donations, the Melikian Center Awards Program provides scholarships of up to $1,500 for superior applicants to study Ukrainian in CLI-Arizona.

ASU students, non-ASU students, teachers, and other non-students are eligible to apply for this funding.

MELIKIAN CENTER TARGETED AWARDS FOR UKRAINIAN

The Melikian Center is offering a limited number of awards of $1,000 for students of Ukrainian. This funding was made possible by the generous support of Melikian board members, the Arizona-Ukrainian community, and other private donations.

ASU students, non-ASU students, teachers, and other non-students are eligible to apply for this funding.

NEED-BASED FEE REDUCTION

The Melikian Center offers a $1,000 reduction of the published 2019 CLI program fee for qualified Pell-eligible students. This $1,000 reduction applies to Tempe-based or study abroad programs, up to the total program fee. Please indicate your Pell eligibility on the general application to be considered for this fee reduction.

Program Fee:

Thanks to ASU institutional support, CLI does not charge tuition (in-state or out-of-state) for its credit-bearing courses. 

Instead of tuition fees, we charge a flat administrative fee of $1,500.*

*For information about our reduced program fees for PELL-eligible students, please see the “Funding” tab.

Please keep in mind this fee covers academics only. It does not cover room, board, travel, study abroad program fees, books, or insurance.

This fee is the same regardless of language, and number of credits taken.

4-week optional extension

Study abroad in Kyiv

Students of CLI Summer Ukrainian in Kyiv immerse themselves in Ukrainian culture while strengthening their mastery of the language through specially designed courses and extramural activities. This small, flexible program is customized to meet the needs of each participant.

ELIGIBILITY
Successful completion of CLI-Tempe 1st-Year Ukranian intensive course.

CULTURAL PROGRAMS
Since this program is small, CLI customizes it to individual students. Excursion and activities schedules are set up each year in consultation with participants, but have included:

  • National Art Museum
  • Museum of Western and Eastern Art
  • Museum of Chernobyl

  • Mikhail Bulgakov Museum

LOCATION
Kyiv is the capital of Ukraine with population of about 3 million citizens. It is situated on the Dnepr River and boasts architectural monuments that are recognized world treasures. Kyiv is the largest cultural, scientific and industrial center of Ukraine, the place of religious pilgrimage and a very attractive tourist destination. Hospitable Ukrainians are delighted to introduce Slavic culture to foreign guests. 

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
CLI's program in Kyiv is managed jointly by Arizona State University and NovaMova. Classes are conducted at NovaMova's school in Kyiv.

Students live with Ukrainian-speaking host families. Host families provide breakfast and dinner. Students purchase lunch in any of the restaurants in the vicinity of their classroom building.
