BACCALAUREATE CERTIFICATE IN RUSSIAN, EURASIAN, AND EAST EUROPEAN STUDIES

The Baccalaureate Certificate in Russian and East European Studies encourages students to develop special competency in Russian or East European languages and area studies. Coursework leading to the certificate is offered by the departments of Agribusiness, Anthropology, Architecture, Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, Religious Studies, Russian, Sociology, and Women's Studies, but the Certificate program is open to all students, regardless of major.

Certificate holders enhance their prospects for study abroad fellowships and graduate admissions, and also qualify for unique entry-level government employment opportunities. Past certificate awardees have moved into positions of leadership in government, academia and the private sector.

Requirements

  1. Three years (22 semester credit hours) of Russian or another Eurasian or East European language;
  2. 30 semester hours (at least 24 upper-division hours) in Russian or East European area-related coursework.
At least three disciplines must be represented in the area-related coursework, and at least 12 hours must be drawn from area-related coursework outside the Department of Languages and Literatures (i.e., non-RUS and non-FLA courses). The Melikian Center certifies that all requirements have been met for the Russian and East European Studies Certificate at the time of the student’s application for graduation. Certificate recognition is noted in the student’s graduating transcript, which reads, Major in [Discipline], Emphasis in Russian and East European Studies.

Frequently taught classes meeting the requirements of the certificate program are listed below. A list of eligible courses being taught this semester is available here. This list is for planning purposes only. It does not contain every class that might count toward the REESC Certificate and certain classes that are on the list may not qualify in a given semester, depending on the instructor and course content for that semester. Students are strongly advised to consult with a REESC advisor (COOR 4465) every semester to learn exactly what REESC-eligible courses are being offerring in a given semester.

Certificate students are encouraged to consider study abroad and related fellowship opportunities to advance their language skills.

Since the REESC Certificate program is highly personalized and extremely responsive to changes in course offerings across many disciplines, students should consult a Center advisor as early as possible in their undergraduate program.
