SPOTLIGHT: MC PROJECTS IN KOSOVO

Engaging adults in democracy by staging mock elections for their children; building prosperity by improving transparency in business; and engaging leaders in reasoned discussions of religious differences... These are three of the Melikian Centers ongoing projects in Kosovo, the world's youngest country.

FUTURE VOTERS OF KOSOVO
In an exciting experiment in participatory democracy, the Future Voters of Kosovo project, modeled on “Kids Voting USA,” is helping bring voters to the polls in Kosovo by letting kids vote mock elections at polling places during elections. In the U.S., such programs raise voter participation by 6 percent. More on 'Future Voters of Kosovo'

ACCOUNTANCY EDUCATION REFORM
Five students from the University of Prishtina have come to Tempe for year of intensive accountancy training. Upon completion, they will return to Kosovo to lead a new accountancy program in their university. The accountants they train will create a more transparent market and prepare Kosovo to compete in the European economy.

FAITH, COMMUNITY, & CIVIL SOCIETY
As of the State Department’s “faith and community” initiative, ASU is arranging exchanges for religious and lay leaders from the Balkans and from the U.S. to explore legal and social issues surrounding religious freedom. In 2008, groups traveled from Bosnia and Arizona. In 2009, groups will come from Kosovo and Arizona.
